Dear Lootius,

Time is a strange thing. It moves forward relentlessly, yet in the grand design of the Universe, it seems to stand still. The Time Machine (2002), a modern adaptation of H.G. Wells’ masterpiece that I watched a few days back with a friend, teaches us that no matter how far we travel, whether thousands of years into the future or across the expansive cosmic frontiers of Entropia, one cannot change the truth.

In the film, Alexander Hartdegen is not just a scientist but a man driven by loss. Unlike his literary counterpart, his journey is not purely about knowledge but about the desperate attempt to undo a personal tragedy. His quest to save Emma, the woman he loves, ends in frustration when he realizes that fate will always find a way to correct itself, no matter how many times he travels back, her death is inevitable. And so, he pushes forward, propelled by a need for answers, only to find that even in the distant future, humanity remains divided between those who live in ignorant bliss and those who control from the shadows.

In his journey through time, he encounters the Eloi – carefree, innocent beings who live in blissful ignorance, unaware that they are, in fact, controlled by the monstrous Morlocks lurking beneath the surface. In the 2002 adaptation, the Morlocks are even more terrifying, ruled by the all, knowing Über-Morlock, who explains that the balance of power cannot be changed. The Eloi exist to be prey, and the Morlocks exist to maintain the system.

The forces of the Universe

In Entropia, we see players who move through the universe carefree, hunting, mining, crafting, and enjoying the game as it comes, never questioning the forces at work behind the scenes. And then there are those who see the hidden mechanisms: the economy, market shifts, and decisions made by unseen hands. Some accept it, some fight against it, but none are entirely free from it.

But then there are the ones even more trapped. Not in ignorance, nor in awareness, but in time itself. Some remain stuck in a loop of old grudges, bound by past disappointments in friendships, heartbreaks that never healed, or even something as trivial as being shot in PvP by someone they had a crush on or trusted.

Their emotions become anchors, blinding them to the fact that the universe has moved on while they remain frozen. They refuse to let go, refusing to accept that time only moves in one direction. The result is that they become their own Morlocks – creatures lurking in resentment, feeding on what once was, unable to embrace what could be. But also struggling to separate facts from personal emotions.

And then finally, there are those who refuse to let unseen forces dictate their own beliefs or actions. I do not shape my faith to fit the system or another person’s belief. Personally, I do not act in ways that I do not find just. My experiences are my own to make, and I will never let another’s past define my future – or force my own experiences on others, nor will I let someone else’s bitterness or caution dictate how I navigate my own path. I will listen, I will consider, but I will not be controlled like that. If you believe otherwise, then I will be your greatest challenge yet.

Balance will remain

Like Alexander, I refuse to believe that all paths are predetermined. Yet, just like him, I understand that balance will always assert itself. Changes can be made, systems can shift, but equilibrium will always find a way to restore itself. In the end, all debts are paid. We reap what we sow. The wheel turns, no matter who tries to stop it.

Fate cannot be undone, only lived through. Alexander learns that despite all his efforts, he cannot truly alter the course of history. Just as in Entropia, no matter how much we try to control, predict, or manipulate, we are still part of something greater. Some connections will last, others will fade. Some will be lost by our own hand, others by the will of fate. It is not for us to decide who stays and who goes – only to carry the weight of our choices.

And that, my fellow Lootians and Entropians, is where faith comes in. Not blind faith in what we cannot see, but faith in ourselves, our gut feeling, in the balance we maintain, and in the choices we make. The relationships we build in this universe, whether fleeting or eternal, are ours to nurture, ours to mend, and ours to let go of when the time comes. We cannot escape fate, even if we do not agree with it.

But we can make sure that, when the moment arrives, we face it not as Eloi, blissfully unaware, nor as Morlocks, lurking in the shadows, but as true players of the Universe, shaping our own path. And as true humans, with dignity and understanding, knowing that a real friendship will last no matter the differences. No one in a relationship, whether a friendship or between loving partners, should try to force the other to change or dictate their beliefs. I won’t, and I trust that the people near me won’t either. That is where respect and true love find their way.

And while I am an extremely patient and generous person, even balance has its limits. A wheel that turns too far one way will always correct itself – sometimes with more force than expected.

But let’s end on a fantastic note. Next weekend, the 22nd of March, a grand Space & Pirate Party will take place at Club NEVERDIE on The Howling Mine. Let’s all forget our daily worries and celebrate together – regardless of opinions, societies, beliefs, skill levels, or old grudges.

  1. “The result is that they become their own Morlocks – creatures lurking in resentment, feeding on what once was, unable to embrace what could be.”

A crystal distillation of the truth, right there.
